Meridians — the body's rivers
What traditional Chinese medicine teaches the modern body about energy and calm.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the meridians are described as the body’s “energy rivers” — a network of pathways through which life energy, known as qi, circulates.
According to this understanding, it is essential for both physical and mental balance that this energy can flow freely. If blockages or imbalances arise in the meridians, they may manifest as tension, restlessness, or various forms of discomfort in the body.
Although modern science does not work with meridians and qi as concrete, measurable entities, there are interesting parallels.
Methods from TCM, such as qi gong, acupuncture, and reflexology, have been shown to influence the nervous system. Among other effects, they may reduce activity in the body’s stress response and strengthen the parasympathetic nervous system — the part responsible for helping us relax and recover.
In this way, TCM can be seen as offering a different language for some of the same processes that modern understanding describes through the nervous system, hormones, and the body’s regulatory mechanisms.
A focus on energy flow and balance can therefore be viewed as a way of working with calm, body awareness, and regulation in a busy everyday life.
